Sabbatical - from the church bylaws

Sabbatical … where did it come from?

The following is from the bylaws of New Work Fellowship:

While the scriptures do not address a “term of service”; the scriptures do teach the principle of the sabbatical. There may be seasons where an Elder takes a period of time off from being an active member of the Elders, in order to reduce his leadership load. As such an elder may request a sabbatical in which they resign from active service.

In an effort maintain a high level of commitment and effectiveness, each year the current elders will be asked to reaffirm their desire, ability, and spiritual readiness to serve for another year.

Likewise every year, one third of the elders will rotate off active service. (As such, the elders are serving a three year term). At the end of three years, elders will take a one-year sabbatical unless the remaining elders unanimously determine that the season of the church-life necessitates continuity of leadership.

The Senior Pastor/Elder is the exception to the periodic sabbatical leave, but the elders should protect the Senior Pastor with generous sabbatical retreats available after designated periods of service.
